Immediate Effect of Appendectomy on Lymphocyte Subest Populations

Abstract
This study was performed to assess the effect of appendectomy on various T-cell subsets and differential counts of peripheral white blood cell.
We have examined lymphocyte and subsets changes serially during the postoperative period in 20 appendectomized patients de to acute appendicitis, as well as the blood samples from 10 cases of control group who underwent other moderate-invasive
general-surgery.
@ES The result obtained were summarized as follows:
@EN In comparison with control group,
1) The apendectomized patients showed decreased level of total lymphocyte and T-lymphocyte (CD3), helper/inducer T-lymphocyte(CD4, OKT4), and suppressor/cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CD8, OKT8) on 3rd day after operation.
But on 7th day and 14th day, these value was increased gradually up to normal.
The control group showed same data.
2) Also, there was no particular change in CD4/CD8 ratio during the follow-up period.
3) The level of granulocytes count on 3rd day, 7 th day, and 14 th day after operation was not hanged significantly but monocyte count was tend to decrease on appendectomized group than control group.
On the basis of this results, basically there was no specific change in appendectomized patients compare to other surgical patients.
